CHAPTER 11

After dropping Mitzi off at her office, Kat drove back to the police station. She was glad she’d had some time with Mitzi and made a mental note to organize a future dinner for her three closest friends once she’d gotten to the bottom of the Matt Oldfield murder case.

Kat parked and went into the police station to find Detective Exall. He was sitting in his office and stood up when Kat walked into the room. “We’ve invited Richard Dodds and Rachel Oldfield in for a meeting to discuss where they both were at the time of Matt’s murder. I’m also going to ask them to explain the relationship between the two of them, so we can determine if it has anything to do with the circumstances surrounding Matt’s murder,” Bruce said.

“And have they both arrived?” Kat asked.

“Yes, although I can’t say either one of them is very pleased about having to come into the police station.”

“I bet they weren’t. Imagine how that would look at the country club.”

Detective Exall chuckled, “Especially when news of the affair gets out as well, because things like that always do.”

Kat murmured in agreement, then asked, “Will I be able to observe and take some notes of the interviews? I’d really like to see how they each react when you put them on the spot with difficult questions.”

“Yes, that’s fine, Kat. I’ve already cleared you with the station commander who knows about your work as a private investigator, so I had no problem getting you approved to watch the interrogations. When we’re finished, I want to talk to you, because I’ll be interested to find out what you thought about them. At the moment both of them are on my list of suspects and will stay there until they can clear themselves.”

“Do you have any plans to bring Paul Parvis in for an interview?” Kat asked.

Detective Exall was pacing around his office, clicking his pen in and out. He stopped and looked at Kat when he answered, “As for Parvis, I’m treating him a bit differently than the other suspects. Now, I know that sounds dicey, but hear me out.”

Kat nodded, waiting for his explanation.

“The IRS contacted me and confirmed that Parvis is the subject of a serious fraud investigation, which may include things that we don’t yet know about this prominent local businessman. I told them about the murder and Parvis’ possible involvement in it. They told me that they’re getting close to discovering some very incriminating things regarding Parvis, and they asked if I would keep my investigation quiet regarding Parvis and any known associates we may come across, because they don’t want to spook him into cleaning up his act before they’re finished with their investigation.”

“I see,” Kat said.

“They don’t want him to stop his possibly criminal activities yet and start destroying evidence or hiding his money, because there’s a very good chance he could just split and go to the Cayman Islands or somewhere else like that. I told the IRS about our initial talk with Paul at his store and they said that would have been expected.
